Thrips

What you'll see

Why it happens

Thrips are tiny insects with fringed wings that scrape and suck out surface cells. Some, like western flower thrips, also spread plant viruses.

How to fix it

  1. Move the plant away from others, rinse the leaves, and cut off damaged buds, flowers and tips.
  2. Hang blue or yellow sticky traps indoors to catch adults and track numbers.
  3. Use insecticidal soap or horticultural oil for a quick knockdown, or spinosad, which works better, and repeat as the label allows.
  4. Keep kids and pets away from treated plants until the spray dries.
