Natural change

Pups and offsets

Small new plants growing from the base of succulents and snake plants; a sign of a healthy, mature plant.

What you'll see

Why it happens

Many succulents and clump-forming plants spread by making offsets, small copies of the parent that root around it.

What to do

  1. Leave them to form a fuller clump, or separate them in spring once they have their own roots.
  2. To separate, unpot the plant and pull, tease or cut each pup away with some roots attached.
  3. Let cut ends dry for a day or two, plant in fresh, gritty mix and water lightly after 2 to 3 days.
