New leaf unfurling
Brand-new leaves often look pale, soft, rolled or oddly colored, then firm up and darken within a week or two.
What you'll see
- A pale, soft, rolled or crinkled leaf pushing out of the center of the plant or along a vine.
- Variegated or colorful plants put out paler leaves that color up over 1 to 2 weeks.
- The new leaf is clean and firm, with no rot smell, and it opens a little more each day.
Why it happens
New leaves are thin and tender while they expand, and their color and shape settle as they harden.
What to do
- Leave it alone: don't handle, turn or move the plant while the leaf opens.
- Give bright, indirect light and keep the soil evenly moist, not soggy.
- Give climbers a stake or moss pole so new leaves unfurl cleanly.
Keep it from coming back
- Wait to repot until the new leaf has finished opening.
- Look closer if many new leaves stay twisted, or if you see sticky residue or tiny insects.
